Der Ätna ist ein aktiver Schichtvulkan an der Ostküste von Sizilien, Italien, in der Metropole Catania, zwischen den Städten Messina und Catania. Sie liegt über dem konvergierenden Plattenrand zwischen der Afrikanischen Platte und der Eurasischen Platte. Er ist einer der höchsten aktiven Vulkane Europas, und der höchste Gipfel Italiens südlich der Alpen mit einer aktuellen Höhe (Juli 2021) von 3.357 m (11.014 ft), obwohl dies je nach Gipfelausbruch variiert. This makes it by far the largest of the three active volcanoes in Italy, being about two and a half times the height of the next largest, Mount Vesuvius.
