Der Gau Westmark, in dem 1940 2,6 Millionen Einwohner lebten, umfasste mit einer Gesamtfläche von knapp 14.000 Quadratkilometern nicht nur den zu Bayern gehörenden Regierungsbezirk Pfalz und das Saargebiet, sondern auch das seit 1940 unter deutscher Verwaltung stehende Lothringen. Der Sitz der Gauleitung befand sich bis 1940 in Neustadt an der Weinstraße und von 1940 bis 1945 in Saarbrücken.
