Nachdem es schon seit dem späten 15. Jahrhundert zu Einfällen von türkischen Marodeuren gekommen war, stieß das osmanische Heer im Jahr 1529 bis nach Wien vor und belagerte die Stadt. Nur die Tatsache, dass die Angreifer wegen der späten Jahreszeit zum Abbruch der Belagerung gezwungen waren, konnte die Stadt damals retten. In den folgenden fast 200 Jahren stellten die Türken eine ernsthafte Bedrohung für das Heilige Römische Reich dar und die Türkenkriege (mit oft verhalten beantworteten Hilfsanforderungen an die Reichsstände) waren immer wieder Thema auf den Reichstagen
1683 belagerten die Osmanen Wien ein zweites Mal erfolglos. Einen entscheidenden Ausschlag gab das von Herzog Karl von Lothringen geführte Entsatzheer unter dem Oberbefehl des polnischen Königs Johann III. Sobieski, das mit seinen Husaren vom Kahlenberg aus den Belagerern in den Rücken fiel. In den Jahren darauf gelang schließlich der Befreiungsschlag gegen die osmanische Bedrohung. Mit Hilfe von fähigen Feldherren wie Karl von Lothringen und Prinz Eugen von Savoyen konnten die Osmanen während des Großen Türkenkrieges 1683–1699 und in einem weiteren Türkenkrieg 1716–1718 bis hinter Belgrad zurückgeworfen werden. Im Frieden von Karlowitz 1699 gelangte ganz Ungarn sowie Slawonien in den Besitz Österreichs. Die weiteren Gebietsgewinne aus dem Frieden von Passarowitz (1718) wurden im Frieden von Belgrad (1739) allerdings mit Ausnahme des Banats wieder rückgängig gemacht.
Dies ermöglichte nun ein beispielloses Aufblühen der Barockkultur, die eine spezifisch österreichische Ausformung entwickelte und Stadt (,,Vienna gloriosa") und Land zutiefst prägte.
