Bayern war jahrhundertelang ein souveräner Staat, der seine eigene Außenpolitik betrieb, eigene Ministerien führte und sich selbstbewusst als Macht in der Mitte Europas verstand. Dieser jahrhundertealte politische Eigensinn verschwand nicht einfach dadurch, dass 1945 die Waffen schwiegen. Im Gegenteil: In den Trümmern des Zweiten Weltkriegs begann in Bayern sofort eine intensive Debatte darüber, wie viel Eigenständigkeit das Land in einer neuen deutschen Ordnung behalten sollte. Die Vorstellung, dass Bayern sich in einem westdeutschen Staat unterordnet, war damals für viele Menschen alles andere als selbstverständlich. Und genau hier beginnt unsere Reise durch eine Geschichte, die erklärt, warum Bayern historisch betrachtet eigentlich kaum logisch als Bundesland in die Bundesrepublik passte.
